Frequently Asked Questions
We hear from parents every day who want the best academic support for their children. Below are the questions we get asked most often, along with clear, practical answers from our team of certified educators.
About Polaris Tutors
What is Polaris Tutors?
Polaris Tutors is a Canadian educator-led private tutoring agency that connects students with certified classroom teachers for one-on-one academic support. We specialize in IB, AP, and advanced curriculum tutoring for students at competitive private and public schools.
What makes Polaris Tutors different from other tutoring services?
Every Polaris tutor is a certified teacher with active classroom experience, not an undergraduate student or teaching assistant. Our tutors hold Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) certification or equivalent credentials and have direct experience teaching at leading private schools. This means your child works with someone who understands curriculum design, assessment standards, and how to close specific learning gaps.
Where is Polaris Tutors located?
Polaris Tutors is based in Canada and serves students both locally and internationally through online tutoring. We work with families across the Greater Toronto Area, throughout Ontario, and in other provinces and countries where students follow IB, AP, or Canadian curricula.
Does Polaris Tutors offer online or in-person tutoring?
We offer both online and in-person tutoring depending on your location and preferences. Our online sessions use video conferencing with shared digital whiteboards and screen sharing, which research shows can be just as effective as in-person instruction when delivered by experienced educators.
Subjects and Programs
What subjects does Polaris Tutors cover?
We cover all major academic subjects including Mathematics (IB Math AA, IB Math AI, AP Calculus, AP Statistics), Sciences (IB Physics, IB Chemistry, IB Biology, AP Sciences), English Language and Literature, French, Social Sciences, and university admissions support including personal statement coaching and SAT/ACT preparation.
Do you offer IB tutoring?
Yes. IB tutoring is one of our core specialties. We support students in IB Diploma Programme courses including Math AA and AI at both SL and HL, all science subjects, English, French, and extended essay guidance. Our tutors have direct experience teaching IB courses in the classroom and understand the assessment criteria, internal assessment requirements, and exam preparation strategies specific to each subject.
Do you offer AP tutoring?
Yes. We provide tutoring for all major AP courses including AP Calculus AB and BC, AP Statistics, AP Physics, AP Chemistry, AP Biology, AP English Language and Literature, and AP History courses. Our tutors are familiar with the College Board curriculum and exam formats.
Can you help with SSAT or entrance exam preparation?
Yes. We help students prepare for the SSAT (Secondary School Admission Test) and other private school entrance exams. We recommend starting SSAT prep 6 to 12 months before the test date to allow time for building foundational skills and practicing test-taking strategies.
Do you help with university admissions and personal statements?
Yes. Our university admissions support includes personal statement and essay coaching for Common App, Coalition App, and Canadian university applications, school list strategy, interview preparation, and SAT/ACT preparation. We help students build competitive applications starting as early as Grade 10.
Finding the Right Tutor
How do I know if my child needs a tutor?
Common signs include declining grades, frustration with homework, avoiding certain subjects, or a gap between your child’s effort and their results. However, tutoring is not only for students who are struggling. Many high-performing students benefit from advanced enrichment, contest preparation, or support navigating challenging programs like IB Diploma or AP courses.
Should I hire a certified teacher or a student tutor?
Certified teachers consistently produce better tutoring outcomes. A certified teacher understands curriculum sequencing, can diagnose specific learning gaps, and knows how to differentiate instruction based on a student’s needs. While student tutors may cost less per hour, families often find that fewer sessions with an experienced educator produce faster and more lasting results.
What should I look for when choosing a private tutor?
Key factors include teaching certification, subject matter expertise, experience with your child’s specific curriculum (IB, AP, Ontario, etc.), communication style, and a track record of results. Ask about their teaching philosophy, how they assess progress, and whether they provide session summaries. A good tutor should also be able to explain their approach clearly and adjust their methods based on your child’s learning style.
Is a tutoring agency better than an independent tutor?
Both have advantages. A tutoring agency like Polaris Tutors offers vetted, certified educators, backup coverage if a tutor is unavailable, curriculum coordination, and accountability structures. Independent tutors may offer lower rates but lack quality assurance, backup options, and administrative support. For families seeking consistent, reliable tutoring with qualified educators, an agency typically provides a better experience.
How Tutoring Works
How much does tutoring cost?
Tutoring rates vary based on the subject, level, and frequency of sessions. Contact us for a free consultation where we can discuss your child’s specific needs and provide a personalized quote. We offer packages for families who commit to regular sessions.
How often should my child have tutoring sessions?
For most students, one to two sessions per week provides the right balance of support and independent practice. Students preparing for major exams like IB finals, AP exams, or the SSAT may benefit from more frequent sessions in the weeks leading up to the test. We recommend discussing a schedule during your free consultation so we can tailor the frequency to your child’s goals.
How do you match students with tutors?
We match students based on the subject and curriculum they need support with, the tutor’s teaching experience and specializations, learning style compatibility, and scheduling availability. Every Polaris tutor is a certified teacher, so you can be confident in the quality of instruction regardless of the match.
Can tutoring help with gifted or advanced students?
Absolutely. Gifted and advanced students often benefit from tutoring that goes beyond the standard curriculum. This can include math contest preparation (Euclid, AMC, Waterloo competitions), advanced problem-solving techniques, enrichment in areas of interest, and support with the additional workload of IB Diploma or multiple AP courses. Keeping high-performing students challenged and engaged is one of the most impactful uses of tutoring.
